Sierra Exportadora’s decentralised headquarters in Lambayeque is promoting the cultivation of raspberries and blueberries in the province of Chota, Cajamarca. Through the National Program Peru Berries, training on the fruits’ cost-effectiveness and crop management has been provided to 40 producers in the area.
The head of Lambayeque’s Headquarters, Patricia Monzón Zavaleta, reported that the province of Chota, like other jurisdictions in the mountains, has the optimal weather conditions to boost the cultivation of berries.
“For more than three years, Sierra Exportadora has been encouraging rural communities and producers to form associations and integrate new areas cultivated with berries, thus helping expand the acreage devoted to berries in the country,” she stated.
She reported that, working together in a strategic partnership with the Technological Institute of Chota, plans are underway to implement a raspberry demonstration plot planted with the Heritage variety which will be ready between February and March 2016.
