Locally grown blueberries are available across the US this time of the year. This week is the first pick of Michigan blueberries. “We are currently in the peak seasons in New Jersey and the Pacific Northwest,” says Kyla Oberman with Naturipe Farms. Production is ramping up very quickly in Washington, Oregon and British Columbia and will peak early to mid-July. Domestic blueberries are available until mid to late August.
“Blueberry consumption continues to increase and blueberry growers and the industry are doing what they can to meet consumer demand,” said Oberman. “With ideal growing conditions this season, we are expecting really good supplies and are certainly meeting consumer demand.”
Organic packaging
In the midst of the season, Naturipe Farms has launched new packaging for its organic blueberries. “It is a natural fiber compostable recyclable organic blueberry package which is also top-sealed,” mentioned Oberman. This package vastly reduces the use of plastic. Retailers like the colorful display as they can clearly differentiate the berries as organic as opposed to conventionally grown. The new package was launched at the United Fresh show in Chicago last week. “The package size is one pint, but we are looking to expand as we see its success,” added Oberman.
