Planasa acquires ABZ Seeds, the global leader in F1 hybrid strawberry seeds
Planasa, a global leader in breeding next-generation berry varieties, is proud to announce the acquisition of ABZ Seeds, a renowned breeder of seed-propagated F1 hybrid strawberry varieties. This strategic acquisition marks a transformative step in Planasa’s expansion into the high-growth F1 hybrid strawberry segment and highlights the accelerating industry-wide shift from traditional vegetative varieties towards seed-propagated varieties.
“This acquisition allows us to expand our strawberry genetics portfolio and accelerates development of next-generation varieties to better suit the needs of our clients, growers, as well as retailers and end-consumers all over the world.”, said Michael Brinkman, CEO at Planasa.
“By joining forces with ABZ, Planasa reinforces its vision to drive innovation and sustainability in agriculture and establishes us as the pioneer in seed-propagated F1 hybrid for ever-bearing strawberries. The cultivation of seed-propagated strawberry varieties is becoming increasingly popular due to its numerous benefits over traditional propagation methods.” Kees Konst, Chief Scientific Officer at Planasa added.
The acquisition ensures continuity for ABZ Seeds following the retirement of its founder and CEO, Gé Bentvelsen. Under Planasa’s ownership, ABZ Seeds will continue its legacy of innovation and excellence, supporting its employees, growers, and stakeholders as it grows into new markets and applications. ABZ Seeds will continue to operate independently as standalone business unit in Andijk, the Netherlands, guaranteeing the same high-quality products and service that clients have come to trust. “Planasa’s commitment to preserving ABZ Seeds’ autonomy reflects its dedication to nurturing the company’s unique strengths and culture,” said Brinkman.
A new leadership has already been defined in ABZ, as Marc van Wanroij has been appointed as CEO. With extensive experience and a track record of success, including serving as CEO of Pop Vriend Seeds. “Marc brings exceptional leadership and deep expertise in the food and agribusiness sector and is eager to lead ABZ into this next phase by expanding the varietal portfolio and providing outstanding service to clients worldwide,” said Brinkmann. Marc van Wanroij will be at the Fruit Logistica in Berlin on Wednesday February 5th and part of Thursday, February 6th to meet (potential) business partners. Please send him an e-mail to arrange a meeting.
